From the lowlands of the Caribbean to the northeast, the terrain rises gently forming a mountain chain. The Guanacaste mountain range, with four important volcanoes, extends southeast from the border with Nicaragua to splicing with the central mountain range, which is much higher.

The narrow coastal belt of the Pacific and the Caribbean coast are covered with mangrove swamps and white sand beaches. The Atlantic coast is rather uniform, instead in the Pacific, numerous golfs and coves are articulated.

The weather is hot and rainy, but there is a marked dry season on the Pacific coast, while in the lowlands of the Caribbean it rains almost the whole year. The two regions are covered with forests where they live a huge variety of birds, insects, reptiles and mammals from North America and the south.

The highest, central and Talamanca mountain ranges are of tempered climate, with dry stations on the most protected southern slopes.
