The long and mountainous Peninsula of Baja California extends in parallel to the west coast of the Mexican territory, and is toured longitudinally through the Transcalifornian mountain range, whose heights range between 600 and 800 meters.
About 500 kilometers inside there is a group of volcanic islands called the Revillagigedo Islands. The wide coastal plain along the Gulf of Mexico is bordered by swamps, lagoons and sand banks, while the Pacific coastal plain is narrower and more rugged.
